Re: Roundup
My experience agrees with Cam's. I worked at the Dyce Bee Lab for seven years and ran about 200 colonies. We always kept the weeds down using a combination of weekly mowing and roundup. 

I had very long electric fence lines because we spread the hives out pretty widely to minimize drifting. I had to roundup the fence lines, and also up close around the hives. The rest I mowed. 

I know other beekeepers who roundup extensively as well. It's not an insecticide
