The public has a dim view of what GMO foods are and why they are perceived to be harmful by some. What follows is an example of how information is presented to the public:
Colleen Fogarty Draper MS, RD, LDN, writes in a publication for the public called "Dietitians in Integrative and Functional Medicine" (www.integrativeRD.org). She says:
"Immune function is the process by which the body protects itself from acute illness and chronic disease. Preliminary gene expression research has demonstrated non-organic, GMO foods may depress immune function." and she refers directly to the following publication as a source for her statement:
"Effect of organically and conventionally produced diets on jejunal gene expression in chickens" from the British Journal of Nutrition (2010), 103, 696–702.
Silly me, I go look at the report. Nowhere in the entire report are GMO foods even mentioned!
In the conclusion, they state:
In the present study we describe that there are transcriptional
differences in the jejunum of chickens that were fed
different diets. Forty-nine genes were differentially regulated
between chickens fed a diet from organically grown feed
ingredients, compared with a diet from conventionally
grown ingredients.
Based on our data it is impossible to predict
the implication of those differences, let alone decide which
diet is more healthy or beneficial for the chickens.
