Good morning,
Do you know about
people who can’t gain any fat at all? It can kill them? But fat isn’t bad for
you – lipids are involved in every function of every cell in your body. For
Christmas, it turns out that reindeer see in UV and it saves them from
predators in the snow. Lots of organisms rely on snow to survive. Finally, you
can’t believe how many birds are discussed in the 12 Days of Christmas!
These are some of the recent topics on a free online
resource developed to increase learner engagement and educator content
knowledge. “As Many Exceptions As Rules” tells the stories of organisms that
break biological rules or norms in order to survive and thrive. Through these
stories, the core concepts of the science are reinforced.
The resource can be accessed at : http://biologicalexceptions.blogspot.com
Posted weekly, each story includes pertinent vocabulary with
etymology, interesting questions to spark discussion, links to the reports from
the latest research on the subject being discussed, and a list of online
resources for more information and classroom activities.
Upcoming stories will include a short series on your brain
and exercise. Make those News Years resolutions to work out more, because
exercise can change your brain in many ways, from sleep to mood, to making you
smarter! After that, we begin a series on the sense of taste – cats can’t taste
sweet, no wonder they can be difficult to live with.
