Hot off the press, some good news from one of those oft-maligned
standards-based tests: The National Assessment of Educational Progress
reports today (as part of the 2011 Science Report Card) a positive
correlation between doing science activities NOT for school work and test
scores. ISE, I expect, makes up a very large part of these
not-for-school-work science activities, although I'd love to have more
background questions on out-of-school activities to tease the specifics out.
There is a great deal more data you can analyze yourself available on the
NAEP web site, complete with data analysis tools
(http://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/naepdata/ .
We can't attach a chart on this listserv, but you can find one showing this
result, and much more, at:
http://nationsreportcard.gov/science_2011/science_2011_report/ . The chart
on "science-related activities not for schoolwork" appears on page 11.
(Note: I'm a member of the National Assessment Governing Board, and I do
have a bias in favor of the value of this particular standards-based test).
Cheers,
Alan
