Hi Anahit,
Great question! I hope others will reply too. I found the TOSRA on your
website, www.pearweb.org/atis <http://www.pearweb.org/atis> and was glad I
did. Now that I'm using it, I see the need for something better. Can
anyone recommend a good tool for measuring attitudes toward science and
scientists?
I've been using the TOSRA2 (a shorter version of TOSRA) with an evaluation
at the Saint Louis Science Center. I've given one pre- and one post-test,
but will have another round this spring and summer. The audience, teens in
the Youth Exploring Science program, are an urban, mostly African American
and recent immigrant population. The results of the first round didn't
match our observations and other data, so we will be looking at each item
soon to see if perhaps a few questions are out of date or not appropriate
to our urban teens facing an economic downturn.
I have three references. I've tried contacting all the authors. Fraser is
the only one who replied. I asked for newer information (he had none) and
permission to use it (he was fine with that). Does anyone have better
information?
Fraser, B. J. (1981). TOSRA Test of Science-Related Attitudes Handbook.
Hawthorn, Victoria, Australia, Australian Council for Educational Research.
Ledbetter, C.E., and Nix, R. 2002. TOSRA2: Instrument for External
Evaluation for National Science Foundation, Project SCORE. NSF: Washington
DC.
Mountz, D.K. (2006). The effect of a science core sequence reform on
students’ attitudes toward science. Unpublished dissertation, Immaculata
University.
I hope this helps.
