From the beginnings of life roughly four billion years ago, they have played a central, necessary role. In fact, early life forms used to be veritable vitamin factories.
Reading this article got me to thinking about the flightless birds of the Pacific islands and Antarctica. In every case once they loose the ability to fly, it never returns and it revolutionizes their style of life.
