Dear Hist Arch'rs,

I'm writing to let you know about a new interdisciplinary, transnational
project - the Chinese Railroad Workers in North America Project
(http://www.stanford.edu/group/chineserailroad/cgi-bin/wordpress/) - that is
undertaking collaborative approaches to understanding and appreciating this
long neglected history. The Project is co-directed by Dr. Gordon Chang
(History) and Dr. Shelley Fishkin Fisher (American Studies) at Stanford
University.

The year 2015 will be the 150th anniversary of the introduction of Chinese
workers to the first transcontinental railway across North America, a
project that culminated with Leland Stanford driving the famous "golden
spike" completing the line. The approaching sesquicentennial provides an
unprecedented opportunity to launch a major evaluation of their experiences.

I am assisting this Project by coordinating an Archaeology Network to bring
together archaeologists who have been working on sites, collections, and
topics related to Chinese railroad workers. So far, over 70 archaeologists
and people in related fields have joined the Archaeology Network.

If you are interested, here are some ways to get involved:

1. Sign up to be part of the Archaeology Network of the Chinese Railroad
Workers in North America Project. Email your name, affiliation, contact
information, and a short description of your interests to me at
[log in to unmask]

2. Subscribe to the archaeo_rr_worker list-serve. You can self-enroll at
https://mailman.stanford.edu/mailman/listinfo/archaeo_rr_worker

3. We are hosting a workshop on the archaeology of railroad workers at
Stanford University on October 10-12. If you are interested in attending,
please contact me ([log in to unmask]) or Megan Kane ([log in to unmask])
for more info and registration forms. The registration deadline is Friday
August 16, 2013.

Thanks very much,
--Barb
