Larry:

Both archaeogeophysical (VLF metal detecting, resistivity and GPR) and
archaeogeochemical (pXRF soil and plant) studies would probably be vey
useful in detecting subtle, Civil War earthwork features. See the recent
work on Fort Brown in Texas by Steve Devore of the National Park Service and
Wondjina Research Institute's (WRI)\USACE recently presently study of VERY
SUBTLE prehistoric earthworks at Cahokia that I presented at SAA in
Sacramento. Dr. Mike Hargrave of the USACE may have some other
archaeogeophysical studies that may be applicable.

WRI is investigating the possibility of finding a reported Civil War era
mass burial site from the battle of Valverde in New Mexico and is putting
together it's recently acquired pXRF data on areas of Mexican Army
fortifications\field hospital of the Mexican American War battle of Palo
Alto in Texas, locating a mass burial with pXRF at a post-Civil War site at
Camp Date Creek in Arizona and using pXRF and LIDAR to find VERY SUBTLE 1565
French\Spanish earthworks associated with Fort Caroline in Florida. Give me
a call at WRI's Sonora California Office number (209) 532-3873 if you need
further information or to discuss your project.

Hope this helps!

Sincerely,
