The lessons I could share would fill a book. I used to be the family seller at the farmer's markets, but a change in my wife's work schedule allows her to sell (which she enjoys) and gives me more time to attend to the bees (which I prefer).
We get the craziest questions and the weirdest assumptions from customers. I love the countless times someone says to me, "Did you know honey is good for _________?" Basically, the customer is always right, and a little magnimous grace on my part goes a long way to fostering goodwill and a returning customer. So I just nod and respond with, "Really?" They must think I'm a fool.
The beauty of selling honey is that it doesn't have to be "sold," it sells itself. Everyone seems to assume the healthy reputation of honey. Every customer has a story to share and the best thing I can do is give them a little time to tell their story.
The farmer's markets represent capitalism on the ultimate direct marketing approach.
