Archaeologist I (Archaeological Curator) position being advertised for Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex of the West Virginia Division of Culture and History.

The position is with West Virginia's archaeological collections management facility located at Grave Creek.  The candidate will work with both historic and prehistoric collections.

The 9,600 square foot research facility opened in 2008.

Closing date for the position is 8 November.



POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Under the grave creek mound archaeological complex site manager, candidate will oversee the successful operation, care and maintenance of the West Virginia archaeological collection.

JOB DUTIES:
Duties may include: repackage the existing archaeological collection and its related photographic and documentary material following established procedures; receiving and answering requests for information; refine and update existing collections database including, but not limited to, revising existing database to reflect results of repackaging and inventory, as well as adding information regarding newly accessioned collections; assist with supervision of volunteers working with collections and library; ability to work closely with museum staff, such as providing museum tours, attending museum functions and operation of gift shop; integrate archaeological collections into rotation of museum exhibits and displays; engage in minor archaeological fieldwork activities; assist in development of grant applications in cooperation with agency staff; determine ownership of materials including documentation of state ownership of collections when possible, and pursue the deed of gift process with items or collections not expressly owned by the State of West Virginia; candidate should be comfortable with multi-tasking on a number of projects concurrently; attention to detail and organization skills desirable; computer skills, such as Microsoft Access desirable; heavy lifting may be required; knowledge of West Virginia history and prehistory helpful; other duties as assigned. May be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays. A successful criminal background check may be a condition of employment. 


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  
Training: Master's Degree from an regionally accredited college or university in archeology or anthropology. 

Substitution: Experience as described below may substitute for the required Master's Degree on a year-for-year basis. 

Experience: One year of experience in archeological research activities.
