Julie -

We should have a copy of the Sully report in our archives at the James Lee
Center. I have referred to it in the past (and was going to refer you to
it). I am away from my office for the next few days, but have left a
message with one of our staff to check on it.

Julie,

I know that the College of William and Mary investigated a late 18th C.
mikvah in St. Eustatius, Netherlands Antillies back in the 1980s under the
direction of the late Dr. Norman Barka. I believe it may be one of the
oldest in the Americas. You might also check with the St. Eustatius Center
for Archaeological Research (www.secar.org).

Secondly, back in 1990 I investigated what I interpreted as a late 19thC
animal treadmill-powered buttery at Sully Plantation, adjacent to Dulles
Airport in northern Virginia. It was a part of its dairy complex. I
prepared the report through MAI (MAAR [MidAtlantic Archaeological Research]
Associates Inc.) of Newark DE (although I was in the Williamsburg VA
office). Unfortunately I believe MAI no longer exists. I would imagine
that Sully Plantation or Fairfax County has a copy of the report on file,
see: www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/sully/

If they do not have a copy, I might be able to dig through my old reports
and relocate my copy.

US

Dear Fellow Histarchers,
My colleagues and I are working on an rural site in Connecticut that
contains
oundation remains of a ca. 1890s synagogue, ca. 1910s mikvah, and ca. 1890s
reamery building. We are looking for any comparative archaeological data on
hese three types of features in the U.S. So far we know about the two
mikvah
ites in lower Manhattan and the one in Baltimore, but are unaware of any
thers. We also are having trouble finding archaeological data for
synagogues:
ost sites seem to deal with the superstructure, not the archaeological
remains.
reamery data are also tricky to find; most of the references I've seen are
for
he Midwest. I have done the usual internet searches and searches of a
number
f SHPO and NRHP databases. We have much historical data for Jewish
occupation
n Connecticut already and so are mostly looking for archaeological data at
this
oint. We would greatly appreciate any information you could share.
Feel free to contact me off-list.
Thanks.
