John Wells, then with VDOT did a context for motels along the US Rt. 1 corridor in Chesterfield County, VA. It was rather specific to one area, but has general applicability regarding motoring and vacation trends. The report is at the Virginia Department of Historic Resources in pdf format.

In that area, the competing motels were part of an informal commercial network that adopted local amenities that travelers would enjoy, mainly off-site dining (although most had their own in-house facilities) and family oriented swimming lakes.

Can anyone offer resources (of particular interest are CRM reports) that might help interpret the material culture? Those resources regarding American motoring and vacation trends would be especially useful.
