I want to second Mike Polk's recognition of the success of SHA 2010
on Amelia Island, Florida. With over 900 officially registered and
ca. 1,100 attending it was a technical success but more importantly
it was a success as a conference. The setting was wonderful [except
it was isolated physically and thus probably expensive for our
student members] and the 15 min. for papers experiment worked, I
think, quite well.
We had some wonderful special events like the tours and the Public
Session at Kingsley Plantation. We could see the sun rise every
morning from out hotel windows and the beach was very enjoyable. It
was wonderful and clever that the organizers froze all the
alligators, dangerous snakes, and mosquitos. I actually liked the
cold. The Banquet and Awards Ceremony were very well done with great
acceptance speeches - Southern political humor by more than one
winner and a "thank you talk" by Judith Bense we will long remember.
Congratulations to Della Scott-Ireton and all her conference
committee members on a complete success for SHA 2010.
We now all look forward for 2011 in Austin, Texas.
Bob Schuyler
