Jerry gave a very good reply. Can confirm the bit about shifting the hive
in during the day to lose the field bees. One recommendation is to have
several hives outside and rotate them. The hive shifted in loses its field
bees and these are pick up by the hive being brought out of the glasshouse.
In the southern hemisphere we find that we locate the hive in the top north
west corner as this is where the bees tend to congregate. So for the
northern hemisphere it would be the south west corner.
Also queens tend to go off the lay when in glasshouses. I have successfully
fed supplement to hives in glasshouses to stimulate egg laying thus
stimulating field activity. Also sugar syrup feeding helps the hive cope
with a lack of nectar from many crops that are grown in glasshouses.
