I like Debian. Ubuntu is sort of "user friendly," but, like Mac, kind of gimmicky, with too many flashy graphics.
Debian is serious, and looks a little crude in comparison, but... is solid.
One problem is that Linux does not have a good CAD program; GRASS and QGIS work on it, and the "LibreOffice" is as good as the Windows "Office" package.
But it doesn't have the spyware Microsoft has now built into everything.
