> I would rather see people taught to recognize AFB and to know to reach
out for help if they think their hives have it.

We have so many new beekeepers that this season coming we either are going
to have a lot of swarms or AFB because they will not be able to identify
problems. Some of last years 101 classes had 50 students in a 5 week class
with no hands on time. In the one mile radius of my house there are six new
beekeepers some have six to eight hives. I have a few apiaries but do keep
bees in my home yard and those hives are now dealing with a lot bees in the
area. In Maine beekeeping is becoming a hobby that every one seems to want
to do. Our county club has grown also we have around 150 members but at the
meetings I see that same 30 to 40 faces each month. It will be real
interesting to hear how all these new hives make it through the winter, to
see how many swarm calls I get and I really hope we do not start to see a
come back of AFB in the area. There was a huge problem with it about 20 or
25 years ago here. The old guy I work with still remembers every where it
showed up. I will have some one ask me to put hives on their farm and he
will say no the farm up the road had AFB and the old equipment may still be
in the barn.

It is wait and see.
