Hi,
I think the assertion that they are wheel thrown has been made by those studying the manufacturing process in Central Mexico.
One partial exception we had at the Palace of the Governors back in the early 2000s was a 17th century piece with applied molded decoration (a cherub looking figure) on a piece of plain white majolica. Based on a visual inspection of the paste, it was most likely manufactured in Puebla and was atypical of the assemblage as a whole. Although if I remember correctly similar pieces have been found throughout the Empire and the soup plate body appeared wheel thrown.

Subject: Maiolica shape query
Hi All,
Maiolica vessels are almost always described as wheel thrown.
Yet among certain types – Tumacacori Polychrome (Azul Punche), and what is known as Molded Blue on White in Texas / and Late Blue on White in Florida / or San Augustin Blue on White in California – the rims are described as molded and the vessel shapes appear to be closer to Euro American soup plates than the open bowl Soperos.
Were these later type “molded rim” vessels made on a potters wheel, or molded, or a combination of both?
Thank you in advance,
S. Walter
