Apparently under very suspicious circumstances such a find was made some
nearly 30 years ago. A diving archaeologist (pointless to name him, as he
is long gone from the field) returned to the underwater search area off
Fort Guiharros after the larger group finished the survey without much
discovery. A lot of time and effort went into the execution of a
comprehensive survey and the dive teams had "scupper lip" over no great
finds being made., None-the-less a survey needed to be done. Thus the
mentioned diver thus returned to the water by himself and shortly surfaced
with a string of beads he claimed that he found on the bottom. They
appeared too pristine to have spend much time in the water and consequently
would not have remained strung if they were indeed of historic age. My
understanding was that they were not accepted into the catalog as anything
more than a curiosity. The people to ask are Ron May and Roy Pettus, if
you can find their email addresses. Maybe look on line. As some of the
missions are owned by the California State Parks system, some
archaeological context rosaries may be known by them. A good point of
entry might be Glenn Farris <[log in to unmask]>, although he's retired now
he could put you in touch with Park's Collections Manager.

Wasn't there one found underwater in San Diego Bay near Ft. Guijarros?

Hi All,
I'm looking for information about rosaries from the California Missions.
We got 1, perhaps 2, from near the San Juan Capistrano Mission. I need
pictures or illustrations.
Thanks in advance.
