Charles Orser's text book "Historical Archaeology" provides a good overview
of the development of the field and how it is done. It covers dealing with
documents and other non archaeological sources that we use as well. I have
used it in my courses on historical archaeology. For additional
perspectives on the field, of course Deetz's "In small things forgotten" is
a must and Noel Hume's "Historic Archaeology" provides an interesting
perspective on the field as it was forming.
