I am a hobbyist beekeeper in New Hampshire with a few hives and have been
monitoring my varroa levels using the sampling method described by the Univ.
Minnesota Cooperative Ext and they indicated that a count of 4.3 mites per
100 bees would be tolerable to most hives and that some hives with 8 per 100
would survive a northern winter. My hives are have counts of 3-4.7. A
local beekeeper went to EAS and come back stating that the recommended
threshold was decreased to 2 mites per 100 bees for treatment.
My question are:
1. what range around the new threshold is acceptable for hobbyist beeks
2. If I should treat, is it too late in the season to do so with MAQS?
Thanks
