Why should a beekeeper who has not had AFB
for 5 years with no preventative treatment be due for AFB? One reason I
could think of is that some other beekeeper is going to give it to that
beekeeper.
This is the reason. I know folks who have clean untreated outfits, and they are very concerned about the new beekeepers who know nothing about disease, and the old ones who have let their hives go. In my opinion, the only solution for this problem in this day and age, is for local bee clubs to try to recruit beekeepers into the fray and educate the heck out them. Voluntary requests for diagnosis should be solicited and the newbees should be helped with their problems in sensitive but conscientious ways. For example, my club knows that I will confidentially inspect any hive in my region if called upon.
