Subject: Archaeology of large buildings 1600-1750
Dear list

I would be grateful for any suggestions, on or off list, for references to
studies and reports on the archaeology of large stone or brick buildings,
of European or European-derived origin, as I find myself in a state of
ignorance.

I am the archaeologist for St Paul's Cathedral, London, and am writing the
first comprehensive archaeological report on the Wren cathedral of 1711, as
a sequelto my previous /St Paul's Cathedral before Wren/ (2011) which dealt
with the cathedral and its site from Roman times to 1666. The archaeology
of a large classical or Baroque complex is just the same as that of a
medieval one - standing fabric from foundation to roof, drains etc. But I
have not so far had any success in finding parallels, from Europe or
elsewhere (eg the US or Canada). In Britain, we have many architectural
histories of grand country houses, but no archaeological studies of
examples after the Tudor period(Acton Court, Hill Hall etc). I have
notfound an archaeological study of the 17th-century Louvre or the Escorial.

I would like to compare my first study of the archaeology of Wren's St
Paul's, that is features of 1675 to the present, with the archaeology of
large complexes such as palaces, cathedrals or government buildings of this
period - if such studies exist. Can colleagues please help me with some
references to look out?
