Hi Ben,
I'm a Certified Grant Writer (TM) through the American Grant Writers
Association (AGWA.us) and specialize NSF grant proposals for ASTC folks.
Most grant writers charge $75-$150 or more per hour for federal grants.
Some charge by the project, but most I've seen tend to charge by the hour
(generally $90-$150/hr) with an upper limit based on the project and your
needs. Most projects I've taken on have ranged from 30-60 hours, with 60
only when the institution has very limited time to help and hasn't done
much pre-planning (these rarely get funded).
A common question is do grant writers get paid only if you get the grant
funded. The answer is no. Grant writers are bound by ethical standards
that prohibit that. Grant writers get paid for the professional work.
There are too many variables that go into a proposal (quality of the
project planning, fit to the RFP, etc) and the funding agency's needs
(availability of funds, grant portfolio, etc) that are beyond the control
of the grant writer.
If you are looking for grant writers, check out AGWA.us or the Grant
Professionals Association (grantprofessionals.org). Both can point you to
grant writers that specialize in your area of need. Both have a
certification process, so consider using someone certified or someone with
good references. There are too many scams out there.
Good luck!
Kit
