You know Jeff, as soon as I posted I remembered how much fun the Hasbro(?) booth was at Maker Faire Austin in 2007.  They supplied thousands of Tinker Toys for folks to work with.  The best part was that when the Faire was over they gave them all to the Austin Children's Museum.  And that was a commercial booth.   But like you point out it's more about what folks "do" with it than what it is.  I'm not sure exactly how the different vendors/booths broke down but the Maker Faire folks must rely on some level of commercial involvement/sponsorship in order to make it happen.

Personally I think the blocks are awesome.  I would suggest them to any museum where there is a need or desire for a real body-on open-ended building experience.
