Hello, all:
We worked with David Rockwell when he was prototyping the blocks, and we have a set. I think they are absolutely wonderful. When you put them out on to a couple of thousand square feet of empty exhibition space, you see great interactions ranging from kids building to play acting with swords (of course). Lots of intergeneration interaction, lots of dwell time. The two things I like about them the best are that they are just explicit enough to invite specific kinds of building, but not so explicit to be too directive; and I love the scale and texture, their physicality is just right. Kudos to the Rockwell firm for working on these for years. I can't recommend them highly enough.
They are also designed to work outdoors of course, so that is an added bonus, and they clean and pack very easily.
So yes, go ahead and get them. As to whether they are "maker-y" enough...let your conscience be your guide ;^)
