Gleaning as much info as I could from the limited promotional material for the show, I get the impression that they are avoiding Native American sites. So they would not have to address the concerns from that part of the public. I'm also guessing that they are careful not to do any digging on public lands while being filmed. So they won't be caught looting artifacts from Civil War sites that are National Parks, either. Since they claim to (A) get land owner permission, and (B) share the profit with the land owner, I doubt they can be legally stopped. Morally, it's another matter, but they don't seem to care.And who knows what they do when the cameras are off. It would be great if they could be caught at something illegal and prosecuted while the show is airing. But that's just wishful thinking.
The promo also suggests that they get some juicy finds, mentioning a cannon, and a Kentucky long rifle. In both cases, my reaction is - what condition are these in when dug up? I doubt the show would show how much time and effort it costs to clean them up and make them into something sell-able. They just want to give the impression that you can earn a lot of money digging up your own back yard. So in hard economic times, this will lead to lots of people digging up other people's back yards, or less legal places. And of course the show would never accept the blame for increased looting by others.Meli

Done. Comments duly recorded and kudos to the very good entries I read. Frankly, I never heard of Spike TV but after the umpteenth bottle, it will get boring anyway, unless they plant valuable artifacts. I think people will be surprised at how little monetary value most artifacts possess.
