This is an interesting perspective on STEM education which contains some historical highlights, exclusively directed toward classroom education. I found the lack of informal educational components to be a great omission however.

The toys of the 19th century are intriguingly reminiscent of informal activities and the child within us.

The referenced Scientific American article highlight the NGSS, and the authors suggestion that climate change, and earth science, with all their complexities are the next crucially important areas of scientific focus and education.

Both are worth a look and read, the latter one if you're a science educator.
