Jeff,

In New York, the Common Core State Standards (usually referred to here as the Common Core Learning Standards) go into effect in SY 2012-2013. The NYC Department of Education is working with schools to adjust curriculum and simultaneously holding Partner Institutes where they invite in museums, theaters, libraries, institutions of higher education, etc. to preview the changes in curriculum.

As a result of these, members of NYCMER (the New York City Museum Educator's Roundtable) invited representatives from the Department of Education (from the central office but also teachers and principals) to present to our museum education community about upcoming changes in literacy, math, science, social studies, and the arts due to Common Core. That session was held in October 2011, and I know that many of our institutions have been getting ready ever since.

One of the big changes that many in the museum community saw favorably was that, to support Common Core, the NYC DOE is pushing for more project-based units of study with deep analysis of a topic or theme, which could create some great museum/school inquiry partnerships.

At Intrepid, as of this fall, all new programs are designed with reference to Common Core, but most of our existing programs are related to the science and social studies standards, and those content areas are not changing (yet).

Hope that helps!

Hi Jeff,
Yes, we are adjusting to the new standards (in fact, as a new one-year-old institution, we actually held off on developing school trip programs until we knew how they would be implemented in Massachusetts).

The initiative may or may not affect field trips for a variety of reasons.

First, in some communities, content may simply shift from one grade to another (in others, it may be a total curriculum revamping). You may, therefore, see different grades visiting.

Second, as long as gas prices and bus rentals go up, field trips will always be affected.

Third, we may all see an initial drop as principals and superintendents wait to see how the standards are playing out with their students.

Fourth, there is a strong movement towards "time on task", which, as you know, is a stake in the heart of field trips.

That's my 2-cents!
