I was always amused with that quote...and no, I never used it, published it, or considered doing so (I'm not sure if it ever appeared in a Mailbox letter...it may have, but that's opinion, not fact, usually). Why would I never use it? Einstein was much wiser than that quote gave him credit for...
Fact checking...I'll challenge an author on occasion, suggest corrections, or decline publication if it is too outlandish...the trouble is that much of what we do is, actually, correct for the author. Some things, of course, hardcore science for instance...I'll bounce off a scientist I think has the most up to date information...but sometimes stuff slips through...we have a small staff...both journals...and limited time each month...I've become familiar with the workings of Mother Earth News lately, and you would not believe their staffing...but we try. Lots of people depend on the information that comes from these journals...we so have a responsibility in that regard...and we take it seriously.
