I took ir images of my yard at the end of last January 2011.  Some were
published in Better Bee Keeping by Kim Flottum page 147. They were taken
before sunrise on a -10 degree F morning.

I attempted to take the photos the morning prior.  That day was also below
zero.  The morning a was 100% overcast but the sun had topped the trees and
the face of the hives toward the sun was imaging red with no indication of
what was going on inside.

With some advice on how and where I'll post some photos for your viewing.
