ISEN-ASTC-L is a service of the Association of Science-Technology Centers
Incorporated, a worldwide network of science museums and related institutions.

Dear All,

I'm a PhD student in the U.K.,and do lots of science comunication in
my spare time, all of it unpaid volunteer positions.

Something we have in the U.K. is a STEM Ambassadors programme,
organised through an organisation called STEMNET
(http://stemnet.org.uk). 'STEM Ambassadors are people from STEM
backgrounds who volunteer as inspiring role models for young people.
They can contribute both to regular lessons or participate in
extra-curricular activities such as STEM Clubs, Careers Days and
visits. STEM Ambassadors open the door to a whole new world for young
people, helping them to see STEM subjects and careers with a fresh
perspective and engage their interest and imagination in new ways.'

Ambassadors register their interest with STEMNET, and schools and
organisations then advertise their volunteer opportunites (or appeals
for help!) through the STEMNET website and monthly news letter. Each
Ambassador is registered, trained and CRB checked, and must do at
least one activity a year to remain on the list. The programme is
adminstered regionally so volunteers only see opportunities available
in their area, and national events. It's a brilliant way to connect
those wanting to volunteer and those requiring volunteers. Maybe
there is scope for something similar in the USA?

On another note, this is a very timely thread for me as I am currently
considering moving the USA and am wondering how I can find out about
volunteer roles and jobs in Science Communication over there. If
anyone does have any insight into where they advertise their
opportunities (i.e. mailing lists and websites I should be keeping an
eye on), it would be greatly appreciated!

Best wishes
Jenni

We are large museum with MANY opportunities for volunteers (too Many?) to be involved, yet we have a very hard time recruiting and maintaining our numbers. We have a small but very dedicated group of individuals and can't seem to grow much beyond that. On top of that we have had a high turnover in the management of this program and I am once again hiring for the position. I would really like to talk with any of you out there that have experience in this area or if you have contacts that you might recommend. Before I hire yet another manager I would like to discuss with others how your programs work.
