I heard a very interesting and rather unappetizing talk by Andrew
Jones yesterday on the archaeology of excrement. He mentioned that
herring bones are regularly found in fecal deposits; of course he was
focusing on York, England, and sites of early medieval date
primarily, but I thought perhaps this is the sort of deposit likely
to have produced the sorts of bones you are looking for.
Sorry I don't have any East Cost US data to hand!
