We have recovered these buttons from an American War of 1812 cantonment, and I can't get a positive identification on what they were used for. Gaiters? Shoes? Cuffs? They are pewter, dome-shaped, and 11 cm in diameter. They can be seen here:

Any ideas will be appreciated. Thanks!
