I started in 1977 when 'self sufficiency' was all the rage. The wheel has turned full circle since then as it is now fashionable again! Having only a very small garden and an allotment, cows, pigs etc were out of the question and so we tried poultry and bees. My wife developed an allergy to feathers after a while and so those fowl that weren't eaten were re-homed.
My son got married last year (now the year before last!) and I gave them an empty hive as a wedding present. My daughter in law, (who is with me at the moment) is in touch with her local BKA who have a communal apiary where she could place it. She has asked for a smoker and veil for her birthday! I'm so pleased!
