I don't know a lot about it other than it has been a known practice as long
as I have kept bees. I've never done it intentionally, although with finger spacing
straight end bar combs, We can get some odd spacings.
I seem to recall, and without being certain, that Michael Bush discusses this.
It is particularly appropriate where people are using smaller bees and smaller
cell sizes.
