About 15 years ago, Frank Millero and I developed a series of exhibits on green fluorescent protein. The gene for fluorescence was first discovered, isolated and cloned several years earlier. As an exhibit component we wanted to exhibit the gene au naturel, in the live jellies. After Herculean efforts, we were forced to turn away from our plans, and focus on other components which became an exhibit called Glowing Worms, which is still exhibited today.
One of the people instrumental in the project was a young struggling grad student at UCB, Lisa-Ann Gershwin. Lisa-Ann has a new book covering her life passion, jellyfish. She has a new book out on the natural history of Cnidarians. 375 million years ago they were some of the most successful groups of organisms on the earth, and ruthless predators of the seas.
Her new book is reviewed by Tim Flannery in the New York Review of Books sounds like a great review, and likely to change your perception of jellies. Their rise in ecological prominence does not bode well for the ocean waters we know.
You may enjoy the read and gain a new perspective on these seemingly ephemeral and delicate beauties of the oceans.
