Hello Pete,
I have had luck using copper and galvanized nails.  The zinc in
the galvanization process creates a good chemical reaction with
the lemon juice.
I've also discovered that if I leave the lemons sit out for a
few hours with the diodes in them, the light gets much brighter.
 I guess the acid corrodes the metal a bit more during that
time...
