I agree! In this imperfect world, people striving to find practical
solutions to problems (such as pest control) find that they often find
themselves dealing with the Law of Unintended Consequences.
The neonics are a case in point. They were developed as reduced risk
insecticides, which is an environmentally admirable goal. Then they were
massively adopted and greatly over applied.
There is an ongoing honest debate about the actual colony-level effects,
which is hardly resolved to the point, IMHO, of being able to make blanket
statements about the degree of harm that they do to bee colonies (clearly
documented in some instances, apparently inconsequential in others).
Open minds are best during this time of evaluation of the research, much of
which (from both sides) has been poorly designed, executed, analyzed, and
extrapolated.
