The short answer is Michigan has two, under the current organization of our state government.

I work for the Mackinac Island State Park Commission, a Type I agency within the DNR. I am stationed at Colonial Michilimackinac State Historic Park. Our state underwater archaeologist is also in the DNR, within the Michigan History Center. The Michigan History Center operates our state museums and historic sites throughout the state, some of which are located in state parks.

For a while in the early 2000s the MISPC, Michigan History Center, SHPO and the State Library were all within the same Department of History, Arts and Libraries, but that did not last long, and the SHPO (including the State Archaeologist) is now in the Michigan State Housing Development Authority. Where we all were prior to HAL is even more convoluted.

Subject: Archaeologists in State Parks?

Not a strictly historical archaeology query, but -

I was asked by someone in our management how many other state parks or departments of natural resources agencies have staff archaeologists. I know of a few from my travels over the years, but some of that information would be rather dated at this point.

Does your state have such staff? Or used to?

Thanks!
John
