1. Anthropology/Archaeology/Heritage Studies
The Department of Social Sciences at Michigan Technological University seeks a tenure-track faculty member at the assistant professor level in Anthropology/Archaeology/Heritage Studies to join an interdisciplinary social sciences faculty.

The Department of Social Sciences offers an M.S. program in Industrial Archaeology and a Ph.D. program in Industrial Heritage and Archaeology. In addition it offers B.S./B.A. programs in Anthropology, History, and general Social Science as well as M.S. and Ph.D. programs in Environmental & Energy Policy. Potential areas of expertise might include heritage planning; industrial and historic site development, interpretation, and management; material culture and industry; and analyses of historic/industrial landscapes.

The successful applicant will teach undergraduate courses in his or her fields, contribute to graduate teaching and research,
seek/secure external funds to support graduate research, contribute to department/university service; teaching load is typically 2/2.

Earned PhD in Anthropology, Archaeology, Heritage Studies or related disciplines in hand at the time of initial appointment (August 2013).

2. Sociology or related discipline

The Department of Social Sciences at Michigan Tech University seeks applicants for a tenure-track, Assistant Professor of Sociology to begin August 2013. The area of specialization is open. Candidates whose research and teaching interests articulate with one of our PhD programs in either Environmental and Energy Policy or Industrial Archaeology are preferred.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop a strong research and publication record and to establish a trajectory of externally funded research.

The candidate will teach two courses per term, usually two to three undergraduate courses and one to two graduate courses each calendar year. Introduction to Sociology (enrollment 30-80 students) is required. Additional courses may be standard lower level sociology courses or other undergraduate and graduate courses within the candidate’s specialty area. 

All department faculty are expected to participate in instruction, to develop a program of publication and externally-funded research, to be engaged in our graduate program(s) and to be active in service. We seek candidates who can work effectively and collegially in an interdisciplinary university setting with a professionally diverse faculty.

Ph.D. in Sociology or a closely related field is required by August 15, 2013.  Experience and interest in social justice, international contexts, interdisciplinary collaboration, or quantitative methods would strengthen the candidate’s application. Applicants who can contribute to existing and emerging department and university strengths are welcome. 

The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong research record, as well as potential for securing external funding. Teaching experience is strongly preferred.

The Department of Social Sciences consists of seventeen tenured and tenure-track faculty and offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees.
