An exception: blood flowing from the right side of the heart to the
lungs in the pulmonary arteries carry deoxygenated blood (dark red),
and pulmonary veins carry oxygenated blood (bright red). In the
fetus, the umbilical artery also carries deoxygenated blood. The
major function of the right side of the heart is to pump blood to the
lungs to become oxygenated. Arteries carry blood away from the heart.
