I have one buddy who hangs a hive tool in every yard.  A nail in a small tree and he's never without a back up hive tool.
 
Another buddy REFUSES to buy new hive tools each year.  He says buying a bunch of new ones just encourages his crew to get lazy and sloppy and lose the old ones.
 
I carry four or five in the truck just in case.  For the most part, my hive tool is either in my hand or in my hip pocket.
