ISEN-ASTC-L is a service of the Association of Science-Technology Centers
Incorporated, a worldwide network of science museums and related institutions.

Larry Bell and I received a grant from NSF to create a catalog of Public Engagement with Science (PES) programs, exhibits, and
activities carried out by science centers and museums, non-profits, universities, community organizations, and media. We’d like to
include in the catalog any work that includes at least one of the following aspects:
• The content focus moves beyond topics about understanding of science and the natural world to topics such as science and technology
processes, societal and ethical impacts, personal or community values, decision making, or policy related to science and technology.
• Audience involvement moves beyond passive learning through reading and lectures to active engagement by asking questions of
experts, sharing views with other participants, participating in deliberation and problem solving, providing recommendations, or
taking part in research activities.
• Scientist/expert involvement moves beyond providing information or giving lectures to communicating with the public, seeking
information or viewpoints from participants, or acting on participant feedback.
Through this catalog, we hope to increase the informal science education field’s awareness and knowledge of current PES projects and
help foster future PES collaborations. To encourage future collaboration, a subset of the people who fill out a case summary survey
will be invited to participate in a two-day workshop about future directions of PES programming at the Museum of Science in the late
spring or early summer 2011, with travel expenses paid by the grant. If your institution has been involved in any of these
activities, events, or exhibits, we encourage you to submit a case summary through our online survey, which can be found here:

Submissions for the catalog are DUE by February 14, 2011. If you have any questions or would like further information about the PES
project, please contact me by email [log in to unmask]
We look forward to hearing about your projects!
Thanks,
Liz Kollmann
