I have a daughter who was "diagnosed" with ADHD.  The museum environment works really well for her.  She takes things in best in smaller bite-sized bits.  Some folks are just wired differently.  I believe one of the greatest reasons the museum environment is still so very important is that it provides access to ideas, information, experiences in ways that fit more different types  of people than the standard classroom, library or even mass media.  

The catchy concept of "Universal Design" is all about making things accessible for everyone without tailoring to specific groups.  The lever-type door handles, icon-based signage and ramps for everyone all fit this concept.
