Barb,
I think the "Deetz 1991" citation you're looking for (where Jim first
published that quip) is:
Historical Archaeology in Global Perspective, a Smithsonian paperback
published in 1991, about which has been said (by one reviewer): "An
excellent introduction to historical archaeology, the book opens and
closes with essays by James Deetz and Kathleen Deagan that suggest
historical archaeology can point to patterns across and among cultures
as well as uncover societies lost to the written record."
