The History & Heritage Committee of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers seeks applications for an ASME History Consultant. The Committee publicizes the historical accomplishments of mechanical engineering, broadly construed, over time and place, seeking to raise public awareness of the profession and its accomplishments. During the summer 2013, the ASME History Consultant will develop material for a new edition of the Committee’s Landmarks in Mechanical Engineering (Purdue, 1997). This entails three tasks: 1. Drawing material mostly from the Committee’s catalogue of landmark brochures, the History Consultant will write entries (each roughly 250-350 words) for the most significant landmarks. 2. Drawing from the brochures and from images in the public domain, the Consultant will compile suitable illustrations (with permissions to reproduce, as needed) for the most significant landmarks. 3. With guidance from the Committee, the Consultant will draft short introductions (250-350 words) for the different topical sections of the book. Those seeking better understanding may wish to look at the Purdue volume, although the Committee plans some major differences in the new edition: a focus on only around 100 landmarks in an oversized format, with primary emphasis on illustrations. The Consultant will work under the direct supervision of a member of the Committee, reporting on a weekly basis. The Consultant and supervisor will, as the summer progresses, gain a better understanding of reasonable expectations for work pacing and output. At this point, the Committee envisions that the Consultant will complete a substantial portion of the book’s copy and illustrations during the summer of 2013. The consultancy may be renewable for a second summer. In addition to receiving an author’s credit, the Consultant should gain a comprehensive understanding of the major innovations in the history of mechanical engineering.
In evaluating applications, preference will be given to advanced graduate students (those past the Masters level) in the History of Technology who can demonstrate accomplishment in research and writing. Experience in public history is a plus. The appointment does not require relocation, but the Consultant must be enrolled in an accredited degree program and must have full access to its research libraries and computing facilities so that s/he can complete all tasks assigned by the Committee. The consultancy pays $25/hour for up to 40 hours per week, for the three-month duration of the project in the Summer of 2013.
