One can always put a frame of young larvae/eggs in a hive and see if they
build  queen cells. I have found this to be an easy way of telling whether a
hive is queenless or not....I dont recall it ever "misleading" me. In 
addition it seems to stave off the onset of laying workers if it is 
queenless.
