Does anyone have access to the following paper:
Fyg WW. 1964. Anomalies and diseases of the queen honey bee. Annual Review
of Entomology 9: 207-224.
I can't even find an abstract online. It doesn't get a single hit in
Apidologie, even just as a reference. I would like to know exactly what
it says about queens and tracheal mites, since queens may be a possible
source of mites for PEI since there has been a tracheal mite finding in
Nova Scotia.
It is quoted here:
http://entomology.ifas.ufl.edu/creatures/misc/bees/tracheal_mite.htm
from that:
The mites puncture the tracheal wall of young bees and feed in the
haemolymph but do not appear to transmit diseases during this process.
Infested bees may behave normally until they die or as described in the
introduction. Infested queens can live for many years (Fyg 1964).
Thanks
Stan
