When the entrance is set to high-opening, the bees can walk right out onto
that side
of the feeder to have access to dry feed or pollen substitute powder or
patties.

I dumped some regular white sugar into one of the boxes to make sure they
had access
to emergency rations if they needed it.

Not that I expect them to: as it was a new hive I followed George Imirie's
recommendation
and fed them sugar water 1:1 all summer to get them to draw the maximum
amount of comb in the supers.

I took off 45 lbs of "honey" and the hive was still so heavy
that when I tried to lift it from the back it was like trying to lift a
refrigerator.
