always the gross protein level, but the amino acids that really count.

Also to consider is the amount of indigestible material, anti-nutrients and 
toxins, in the feed.  Some of the latter can be caused by degradation of 
feed constituents over time.  Lipids, in particular, are prone to going 
rancid and must be chosen judiciously and stored properly.
